Homeless Count Report January 17, 2006

By Victor Masaquoi

On 1/15/06, Phylis and I went to three of the four townships assigned to us for the homeless count exercise, scheduled for 1/25/06. We left immediately after our separate Sunday church services.

Town 1-Portage

We drove through Portage Town, about four miles from Bowling Green. We identified strategic places to visit on the day of the count with the view to seeking information about the homeless. We also looked for potential habitation locations (abandoned houses, schools, under bridges etc.) for homeless people, while driving around.

Town 2-Cygnet

From Portage, we drove across route 75 into Cygnet Town, about three miles from Portage. Again we identified the fire station, post office and a gas station as potential places of contact on 1/25/06.

Town 3 Montgomery-Risingsun

Because it was difficult to retrieve the name of the main town on the internet for direction, we used the names of the smaller towns, like Risingsun, for Montgomery. We drove about 20 miles using routes 64, six and 199. Like the other two places, we found landmarks that we hope to use, come 1/25/06. We made a U-turn on route 23, four miles to Fostoria, the last place we were supposed to go, but did not go because of time.

In sum, this pre-homeless count visit was a wonderful experience. We had the opportunity to see, observe, and experience township and village life, albeit for few hours. The little towns and villages we went through were quiet and covered with acres of farmland. Although there are disadvantages living in those towns, however, one is inclined to conclude that crimes and other vices of society are rarity in those towns.

Homeless Count-Wood County

Homelessness is a serious international crisis. According to the United Nations, over 100 million people are designated as homeless worldwide, whether sheltered or not. People become homeless for several reasons: poverty, death of a primary bread earner in a family, sickness, to name a few. This issue needs serious investigation, and possible solution(s)/policy crafted to address this problem.

Homelessness is present in every country, rich and poor. Here in Wood County, Ohio, the problem is growing, according recent studies.

Against this backdrop, students at the Bowling Green State University in Ohio are collaborating with local nonprofit(s) and authorities to conduct a homeless count this month. Students will be looking for several indicators of homelessness while conducting the actual count. We will use multiple research methods and strategies to accomplish this task.

This is a small but significant way for the University to lend support to the local community in its effort to address pressing social issue, homelessness.
